Manic compression: preserving audio quality

In order to store a sound on a computer, sound waves must be convereted to a digital format. The computer does this by ‘sampling’ each wave many times per second. The more samples that it takes every second, themore accurate the representation of the wave and the better the audio quality. CD-quality audio is sampled 44,100 times every second, and each sample is 16 bits in size.

By default, PCs store the date from a recorded sound wave as a Wav file unless compression is used. Wav files preserve the quality of the original audo but are generally latge, which is why the idea of compressing them to make them smaller is attractive, particularly to those who have portable music players with less storage space.

If you consider that a 70-minute CD album usually uses up an entire 700MB disc, you can work out that a Wav file containing one minute of audio wil use up 10MB of hard disk space.

If you want to archive your CD collection, condiser buying a large hard disk and storing the copies in the uncompressed Wav format to preserve the audio quality. You can then convert the tracks you want into MP3 format for use on your MP3 player. When a significantly better format comes along, you then convert your high-quality Wav files into that format directly rather than reconverting lower-quality MP3s, which would result in a loss of quality.

Computer Viruses

Computer viruses bear more than a passing resemblance to their biological namesakes: they usually reproduce by inserting their code into legitimate programs, much as biological viruses insert their genetic material into a host cell, causing it to be reproduced. They spread quickly between today's highly connected computers, which run similar operating systems and programs, much as colds and flu thrive in dense populations of genetically similar humans.

There are other, more subtle similarities. As in nature, computer viruses spread most rapidly before they are detected and defences ban be mobilised against them. The most widespread viruses are rarely those that incapacitate a computer quickly, as 'killing' the host stops a virus from continuing to multiply and spread.

Within this biological analogy, anti-virus software plays a similar role to an organism's immune system and up-to-date virus signatures are similar to vaccinations. Just as vaccinating the majority of the population against a virus such as polio prevents an epidemic, computers gain 'herd immunity' from a threat if a suitable majority have anti-virus software that can stop it.

Converting analogue video

A significant advantage of transferring VHS recordings to DVD is that you can enhance the footage, add chapters (which makes navigating your home movies easier) and use menus to give your home videos a Hollywood feel, Computer Shopper magazine (113) said.

Unfortunately, unless you have a digital video camera with an analogue input, there's no way of copying VHS videos to your PC without some expense. This is because you need some way to connect a video player to a PC, and PCs rarely come with suitable hardware. The good news though, is that video-capture devices are cheap.

Fortunately, the easiest way to record analogue content and store it in a digital format is to use a combined DVD and VHS recorder. With one of these devices you can play the video, insert a blank disc into the DVD slot and record the content in real time. You'll also have to rip your DVDs "if you want to get the files back on to your hard disk.

Moreover, if you want to transfer your ovies to your PC, you could buy a USB VHS player. Plug the VHS layer into your PC's USB port and install the EZ VHS Converter software that comes with it. When you run the program, select VCR 2 PC and a small box appears on the screen. This displays the video footage on the tape. Type in a file name and then specify how long you want to record for. Press Record and the footage will play in the box onscreen.

The ION VCR@PC provides tracking controls, which you can adjust to get the best video quality. By default, the resulting MPEG files are stored in your My Videos folder. The EZ VHS Converter software has limited editing abilities, but you can use it to cut out unwanted parts of the video.

CS-8000 Circuit Seeker

Last week, I called for a help of an expert electrician here closed in Katy, Texas to check our electric wires and electric box because I felt that there is a serious problem with our electricity. It can't perform well with our high voltage units and appliances.

I was looking at the electric expert as he do fix the problem. He has use a gadget that has a small screen in it. It is called CS-8000 Circuit Seekers as he said. No wonder he easily detects the main problem and that was the concealed wiring and a little break of an open, live circuit. He said that if I didn't directly ask for help, chances are the wire will cause fire.

Indeed, I feel at ease now that our electricity gives its safe function. But thanks to the electricity expert and his CS-8000 Circuit Seeker for a job, excellently work done.
